چکیده

BACKGROUND In Chile, the emergence of drug-resistant strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae has complicated treatment decisions and may lead to treatment failures. AIM to examine antimicrobial resistance trends among pneumococcal isolates from the Catholic University Hospital between 1997 and 2003. MATERIAL AND METHODS During a seven-year period, we examined 901 strains of S. pneumoniae isolated from sterile and non-sterile samples from adult and pediatric population. RESULTS Overall, 20% of isolates showed intermediate resistance to penicillin (MIC: 0.12-1 microg/ml) y 10.8% high level of resistance to penicillin (MIC > or = 2 microg/ml). Pneumococcal resistance to penicillin did not change significantly during the study period, but it was more common in pediatric patients and isolates from non-sterile samples. No isolate had a MIC > or = 8 microg/ml for penicillin. Twenty one percent of pneumococcal strains were resistant to erythromycin, 41.6% to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and 3.6% to chloramphenicol. Macrolides resistance tended to increase between 1997 and 2003. Fourteen percent of strains showed intermediate resistance (MIC: 1 microg/ml) and 2.5%, a high level of resistance to cefotaxime (MIC: > or = 2 microg/ml). No isolate had a CIM > or = 4 microg/ml for cefotaxime. Among those isolates with intermediate or high level of resistance to penicillin, there were significantly more isolates highly resistant to erythromycin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and cefotaxime. CONCLUSIONS Multidrug-resistant pneumococci are common and are increasing in our country, particularly in pediatric population, probably associated to indiscriminate ambulatory prescription of antimicrobials.

Antimicrobial susceptibility and analysis of macrolide resistance genes in Streptococcus pneumoniae isolated in Hamadan

Objective(s): Macrolide resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae pose an emerging problem globally. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of ermB and mefA genes (macrolide resistant genes) by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method and to detect drug resistance patterns of S. pneumoniae isolated from clinical samples to macrolides and other antibiotic agents by E-test method. Materia...

Serotype distribution and antimicrobial resistance of Streptococcus pneumoniae isolates from pediatric patients in Singapore.

One hundred eighty Streptococcus pneumoniae strains isolated from children at a pediatric hospital in Singapore from 1997 to 1999 were serotyped and their antimicrobial susceptibility patterns were determined. Sixty-three percent of the isolates were resistant to penicillin. Significantly large numbers of the strains investigated were resistant to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (87.8%), tetracyc...

In vitro antimicrobial activity of cefditoren and other oral antibiotics against Streptococcus pneumoniae, isolated from children with community acquired respiratory tract infections.

The antibacterial susceptibility to frequently prescribed antibiotics of Streptococcus pneumoniae isolated from the pediatric patients with acute respiratory infectious diseases was investigated in a study of three medical institutions in Korea. Total 143 clinical isolates of S. pneumoniae were available for susceptibility tests between May 2003 and July 2007. Antimicrobial susceptibility data ...

Meropenem susceptibility of Neisseria meningitidis and Streptococcus pneumoniae from meningitis patients in The Netherlands.

In-vitro susceptibility of 299 Neisseria meningitidis and 157 Streptococcus pneumoniae strains from meningitis patients in The Netherlands in 1993 and 1994 to meropenem was determined using the Etest. Susceptibility to penicillin, ceftriaxone, and chloramphenicol was also determined. Rifampicin susceptibility was additionally tested for N. meningitidis. Of the meningococci, 4.3% were of interme...

[Antimicrobial susceptibility, capsular serotypes and clonal relationship of invasive streptococcus pneumoniae isolates in adult population of the Bio-Bio region, Chile. 2005-2006].

Streptococcus pneumoniae infections constitute a public health problem. In our country there is scarce information regarding isolates from bacteraemic episodes in adult population. The antibiotic susceptibility, serotypes and clonal relationship of 56 isolates of S. pneumoniae from adult patients with bacteraemic infections in Concepcion-Talcahuano, Bio-Bio Region, Chile, were studied. Resistan...
